Why is a Ceiling Rose called a rose?
Did you know that the ceiling rose was once not just only a decorative piece in a home? The now commonly used ceiling rose has been around since the early 1800s. The rose has been a symbol of secrecy since Roman times. The Latin phrase ‘Sub Rosa’ directly translates to ‘under the rose’ which means ‘in confidence’. This comes from the practice of draping a rose over a meeting as a symbol of confidentiality and freedom of speech. From this, the physical carving of a rose on the ceiling above a meeting table would symbolise the freedom to speak plainly without consequence. This was frequently practiced during the middle ages and under the rule of Tudor King Henry VIII.
Over the centuries however, the ceiling rose has evolved from this strong symbol to a popular decorative piece, usually used around a light fixture. This is loved for adding an extra touch of glamour to a Victorian period property or more contemporary homes.
How do you attach a Ceiling Rose?
Preparation
To ensure safety and precision, it is extremely important to prepare your ceiling before installation. First of all, we would recommend preparing your ceiling with appropriate light fittings which should be secure enough to hang a light fixture.
Then, to prepare for your ceiling rose, drill a hole in the centre of where you are going to position both it and the light fixture, before sanding the surface of the ceiling where the rose will be. We would recommend using a 120-grit sandpaper pad or a hand sander. Wipe down the surface, then hold the ceiling rose in place and outline with a pencil. Finally, you should mark where the ceiling joists are, which can be found using a stud finder or a professional.
Installation
Apply an easy-to-use adhesive to the centre of your ceiling rose, leaving a 5cm gap around the edges. Thread the electrical cord through the centre hole and push the rose against the ceiling, in the area outlined by pencil, for around 3 minutes (or however long it says on the adhesive glue label). Lastly, screw plaster screws through the ceiling rose into the ceiling joists to secure, before wiping down and leaving to dry. Your ceiling rose can be painted before or after installation to match your interior and overall aesthetic.
